The Countdown has begun for the much-awaited LUX Audience Award ceremony 2025, scheduled to take place on April 29 in the Hemicycle of the European Parliament in Brussels. This year's event promises to be a celebration of European cinema and democracy, culminating in the winner’s announcement.

The LUX Audience Award, a joint initiative of the European Parliament and the European Film Academy in collaboration with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas, has become a beacon for fostering dialogue and engagement between politics and the public through the medium of film. Since its inception, the award has grown in stature, establishing itself as the largest audience award worldwide.

This year’s nominees reflect the rich tapestry of storytelling and diversity present in contemporary European cinema:

  • Animal by Sofia Exarchou (Greece, Austria, Romania, Cyprus, Bulgaria)
  • Dahomey by Mati Diop (France, Senegal, Benin)
  • Flow by Gints Zilbalodis (Latvia, France, Belgium)
  • Intercepted by Oksana Karpovych (Canada, France, Belgium)
  • Julie Keeps Quiet by Leonardo van Dijl (Belgium, Sweden)

Since the nominees were announced at the September Plenary Session in Strasbourg, audiences across Europe and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have been watching and rating the nominees at free screenings in cinemas and online. With equal weight given to public and MEP votes, the combined ratings determine the ultimate winner.

The thousands of ratings submitted so far show just how strongly people connect with European cinema and the LUX Audience Award’s mission of sparking conversation on key social issues through film. If you haven't had the opportunity to rate the films yet, you can do so and make your voice heard until April 27.

The upcoming ceremony at the European Parliament will bring together MEPs, filmmakers, and film enthusiasts for a celebration of storytelling and cultural diversity. As the event draws near, anticipation is high—soon, one film will take home the LUX Audience Award. Speeches will be delivered by prominent figures, including the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, Vice-President Sabine Verheyen (responsible for the LUX Audience Award), and Nela Riehl, Chair of the Committee on Culture and Education.

More than just an award, the LUX Audience Award serves as a platform for dialogue on pressing contemporary issues. Through the power of storytelling, these films inspire empathy, provoke thought, and encourage collective action toward a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to celebrate European cinema and its impact!
